What is the Best Pilates Mat?
People often ask me what mat do I recommend for Pilates as there are so many different mats on the market, it’s difficult to know which one to choose. Choosing the Best Pilates mat depends on your budget and a number of other things.
Having a mat that is thick enough is important to suit your needs so you feel comfortable. Any mat under 3mm or less is going to be quite thin and may be uncomfortable for some of the exercises that require you to lie down. However, some people prefer a slightly thinner mat.
Having a non-stick mat is a definite plus, particularly for some of the standing exercises we do and stretching on the mat, so picking a mat that is not too slippery is also important.
Then it’s just down to whats important to you, would you like a mat free from chemicals? Is it important for the mat to be eco-friendly, or have a snazzy design?Or perhaps you are just starting out and want a cheap and cheerful option.
How Thick Should My Mat Be?
Anything over 3mm, ideally around 5mm or more is a good level of thickness. However, if you prefer to have a thin mat, then opt for one around 3mm thick. If you need extra thickness for your joints then you should look for a thicker mat of around 8mm.
Some people in my classes find some of the side lying exercises uncomfortable if the mat isn’t thick enough, particularly if they are slender or have hip issues. If you know this effects you then aim for a mat like the one detailed below:
Pilates Mat for Thickness
The Meglio Non-slip Mat, which is 8mm in thickness, is a good level of thickness and is also non- slip.
They do one which is 12mm thickness as well, but I find this one a bit slippery and if the mat is too thick it’s harder to balance on when doing standing exercises. You could buy this and use an extra towel to support you if you didn’t find it thick enough, but this level of thickness would be enough for most people. You can buy it for around £20

The Plyopic All in One Yoga Mat (not just for Yoga) is one of the best looking mats and comes in 4 really great designs. Its eco-friendly and made out of natural tree rubber. For every mat you buy, a tree is planted. I love this idea that you can help the environment when you buy your mat. Its also non-toxic, another bonus. It’s not great if you want a thick mat because this is around 3/4mm, but good enough if you haven’t got any particular issues, and actually the thickness I use in my classes. I particularly like the one with the sea/beach scene 🙂 You can buy this for £49.99, this is an investment, but one that you will probably keep for years.

The Goture Non- slip Mat. This is a good all-rounder and great if you suffer with allergies. Its latex free, rubber free, free from heavy metals and is eco- friendly without any harsh chemicals. It is not overly thick at 6mm but provides enough cushioning for most people. I also like the fact that its waterproof and can be washed easily with soap and water. The Gaim Premium Print Reversible Mat. I really like the idea of reversible mats and like the fact that this one is free of harsh Phthalates chemicals. This is important if you do use your mat alot…like me! it’s non-stick and has a decent thickness of around 5/6mm. I love the designs on this one, with plenty of different designs to choose from. So if you are looking for a slightly thicker mat, free from chemicals with a good design, which is reversible then this is the one for you. You can buy this one for around £22-£40 depending on which design you choose.
